Have your say on the proposed Conant Park & Pereyma Outdoor Facility Upgrades

Posted On Wednesday February 15, 2017

The City of Oshawa is inviting residents to share their feedback on two proposed outdoor facility projects:

  1. The development of a shared, multi-use sports field facility, including a running track, lighting and off-street parking at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School. This project has been proposed as a partnership between the City of Oshawa and the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB), and if approved, the organizations would work together to complete the outlined work.
  2. The construction of a new baseball diamond as part of an upgrade to Conant Park (adjacent to the new multi-use sports field facility including lighting identified in project 1). If approved, this project would be undertaken by the City of Oshawa independently.

A Public Open House will be held Wednesday, March 8 between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School (316 Conant St., Oshawa). Staff from both the City of Oshawa and DCDSB will present proposed project details and plans from 6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., following which an informal Question & Answer period will begin.

Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss and provide feedback on both projects directly with staff, as well as document their opinions in a survey. Feedback received will be presented to Community Services Committee in spring 2017 and will be considered in the decision as to whether or not this project is approved and will move forward.

“Staff are looking to improve the sports field at Conant Park in conjunction with proposed changes being made to Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School and we want your input on these neighbourhood improvements,” said Councillor Bob Chapman, Chair of the Community Services Committee. “If you have some suggestions please drop by the Open House or contact staff, they would love to hear from you.”

Residents who are unable to attend the Open House in person are invited to share their feedback on Connect Oshawa (www.connectoshawa.ca/conantpereyma) where they will find an online version of the Open House survey, frequently asked questions, as well as background information about the project. Feedback can also be provided in-person at Service Oshawa, located at City Hall (50 Centre St. S.) and Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School (316 Conant St., Oshawa). Both of these feedback opportunities will be open until Monday, March 20.

Proposed plans for the shared multi-use sports field facility with lights and upgrades to Conant Park will be based on recommendations from the Parks, Recreation, Library and Culture Facility Needs Assessment (www.oshawa.ca/prlc) as well as the Oshawa Waterfront Master Plan, and are in response to the theme of an active, healthy and safe community under the Oshawa Strategic Plan’s goal of social equity.

If approved by Council, both projects are anticipated to begin construction in 2018. To learn more about the Conant Park & Pereyma Outdoor Facility Upgrades, please visit www.oshawa.ca/conantpereyma.
