Board Trustees approve consolidation of Immaculate Conception and Good Shepherd Catholic Schools

At a Special Board Meeting on May 4, 2016, Durham Catholic District School Board Trustees approved the consolidation of Immaculate Conception Catholic School with Good Shepherd Catholic School in the Township of Scugog.

The recommendations were a result of the final report from staff on the Township of Scugog Modified Pupil Accommodation Review. The Board approved the following motions:

  • That the Durham Catholic District School Board receive the staff report entitled ‘Township of Scugog Accommodation Review – Final Staff Report’ dated May 4, 2016.

 

  • That the Durham Catholic District School Board approve the closure of Immaculate Conception Catholic School effective June 30, 2016 and that students be directed into Good Shepherd Catholic School.

 

  • That the students from Immaculate Conception Catholic School be directed into Good Shepherd Catholic School starting in September 2016.

 

  • That the Durham Catholic District School Board consolidate the boundaries of Immaculate Conception Catholic School and Good Shepherd Catholic School starting in September 2016.

The Modified Pupil Accommodation Review was conducted to ensure a viable future for Catholic education in the Township of Scugog. In keeping with the Pupil Accommodation Review Policy PO-430 and Ministry of Education guidelines, the process was structured to reflect a commitment to open, transparent dialogue with families, community members and the public. 

Theresa Corless, Chair of the Board, thanked staff for their work in presenting the final report, and acknowledged the Board’s commitment to providing quality Catholic education for students in our northern communities.

“We are blessed to have wonderful Catholic families in the Township of Scugog, who have demonstrated their commitment to Catholic education,” said Chair Corless. “We believe that the amalgamation of the two school communities will result in a strong and vibrant Catholic school in Port Perry,” she said.

Anne O’Brien, Director of Education thanked families and staff for their involvement in the Modified Accommodation Review process.

“The feedback we have received throughout this process will guide us as we move forward in supporting students and staff during the transition. Together, we will build a renewed sense of community that provides hope for the future and honours the past,” said Director O’Brien.
