RE: Field Renewal Project at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are pleased to advise the St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School community that a section of the school’s soccer field will be undergoing a renewal project which includes the regrading and reseeding of the field.
The numerous reasons for undertaking this project include the need to slow down soil and sediment erosion, remove the many rocks and loose stones on the yard which pose safety concerns and significantly increase field drainage. Once these issues are addressed, we will be able to ensure that our students have the maximum access to the field during the instructional year, rather than the current reality of having significant chunks of time where the entire school is required to be on pavement. The projected time frame for this renewal is May 2021-June 2022.
Working closely with the board, we want to take advantage of our current school closures and access to online learning to commence work on the project beginning Monday, May 17, 2021. We are also working closely with the City of Pickering to secure access to adjacent green space in Woodsmere Park that could be accessed during Outdoor Physical Education, Daily Physical Activity and potentially at recesses. Here is an overview of the project:
On May 17, contractors will bring equipment to the school site and begin the excavation. Temporary construction fencing and signage will be installed to restrict access. This will mean that the field will be out of bounds, with all equipment within the fenced area. In the event that we return to in-person learning later this year, alternate recess cohort zones will be in effect.
Other key milestones for this project include;
• Once the excavation and soil screening is completed, the landscaping portion of the work will be tendered. This is expected occur in June 2021.
• Landscaping, drainage and reseeding is expected to be completed by September 2021.
• Access to the soccer field will be restricted from May 17, 2021 to June 2022.With temporary fencing in place for the duration of this time in order to give the grass time to grow and the necessary time for the field to be ready for use by September 2022.
We realize that a project of this size poses challenges for students, staff and families. Please be assured that significant plans focused on the safety of our students and staff are already underway to mitigate the challenges during this renewal project. Students will continue to have access to outdoor time for physical activity, recess and overall well-being. Your patience and support are greatly appreciated and please don’t hesitate call the school office if you have any questions or concerns in the days ahead.
Yours in Faith,
N. Wheeler, Principal
