John Mullins, Superintendent of Education

Congratulations to John Mullins, Superintendent of Education, on his retirement from the Durham Catholic District School Board effective August 31, 2020!

John began his career in education in 1984 at Neil McNeil High School where in addition to teaching Physical Education, he also designed and implemented a program for students with special needs. In 1987 he was hired by De La Salle College where he worked for 10 years demonstrating his leadership skills in various roles serving as the Head of Physical and Health Education, Athletic Director and Vice-Principal. In 2007, he successfully applied to a Vice-Principal position with the Durham Catholic District School Board working at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School before becoming the Principal of St. Mary Catholic Secondary School.

John was hired as a Superintendent of Education in September of 2013. Since that time, John has been a contributing member of the Senior Administrative Team, supervising Family of Schools and holding responsibilities for a variety of portfolios including Student Trustees and Senators, Secondary Schools, Supervised Alternative Learning, Human Resources and most importantly Student Success. John was instrumental in increasing the board footprint in both Specialist High Skills Major and Dual Credit programs developing partnerships with the Academy for Student Athletic Development, General Motors Corporation and the Durham Home Building Association. As Superintendent, John supported and led several significant board studies which resulted in the introduction of a Grade 7 to 12 model at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School, the establishment of the board’s first single track French Immersion Catholic elementary school and a Regional Arts and Media Program at All Saints Catholic Secondary School.

Throughout his career, John has been a strong advocate for athletics and has been actively involved with coaching, having a particular love of hockey and football. John and his wife Patricia have been married for 29 years and are very proud of their two children, Amanda and Connor. John’s leadership and insight especially regarding secondary education will be truly missed by his friends and colleagues across the Durham Catholic District School Board.
