St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School Recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School commemorated the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a curated bulletin board. With the help of a couple of creative students, Curriculum Coverage Teacher Ms. Rumboldt researched and created the displays for the walls of the school. Having recently discovered her Métis heritage, Ms. Rumboldt wanted to share the truths and current realities of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples in Canada. Ms. Rumboldt felt that it was important to share with students that the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation isn’t a day to simply wear orange shirts; it is a day of solemn reflection and to hear the stories of survivors and learn about the country’s history and treatment of Indigenous Peoples. The bulletin board includes a Land Acknowledgement, details on the origins of Orange Shirt Day, including Phyllis Webstad’s personal story, and information on the residential school system in Canada. In addition, the board includes books that can be found in the St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School library and an orange t-shirt created by Ms. Rumboldt’s student volunteers. Thank you to Ms. Rumboldt and St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School for sharing this display in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
