Parents and guardians are reminded that you must screen your child for symptoms every day before they come to school. You can use the Ontario Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 self-assessment tool for this purpose.

If your child has any symptoms of COVID-19 or if they are ill, they should not attend school. You must report your child’s absence from school by contacting their school directly. Students who become ill during the day will be isolated and must be picked up from school as soon as possible. Symptomatic students will not be able to use student transportation.

Please consult the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 reference document for symptoms (PDF) for other clinical features of COVID-19 and when atypical signs and symptoms of COVID-19 should be considered, particularly in children.

On your way to school or work?

Monitoring Absences in our Schools

In keeping with directions from the Ministry of Education informed by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, the Durham Catholic District School Board is monitoring and reporting student and staff attendance on a daily basis.

Each day, Principals submit their daily absences (students and staff) into the Ontario Absence Reporting Tool. This data is uploaded nightly and reported by school and board. Parents/families and all members of the public can access this data through the Ontario COVID-19 School Closure and Absenteeism Report.

Reporting School Closures

If any school has to be closed by the Board or by Public Health, families will receive direct communication about the closure and information regarding remote learning.

As of January 26, 2022, there are 0 school closures in DCDSB. This data will be updated as required whenever a change occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is absence reporting related to COVID-19 transmission?

The Omicron variant is so contagious that practices previously used to contain cases through school closures and/or class dismissals is no longer effective. As PCR tests are no longer widely available, reporting confirmed PCR tests will not give an accurate representation of COVID-19 activity in the school/community. Additionally, the symptoms of the Omicron variant can be similar to colds and flu. Rapid Antigen Tests are being used to assist in screening for COVID-19 in conjunction with careful daily self-screening.

All staff, students and other individuals who access schools must complete a self-assessment prior to entering a school building or board office. Individuals who have symptoms must follow the directions from the self-assessment to self-isolate. This also applies to household members where someone has symptoms. As a result, where COVID-19 is active in a community, we can expect to see increased levels of absenteeism.

Q: What happens when absences exceed 30% in a school?

If absences exceed 30% of a school’s population, the Principal, in conjunction with our Health and Safety Department will contact the Durham Region Health Department who will provide additional direction to the school community. It is important to note that historically, when we review absence date, we see a daily average of approximately 5% at the elementary and secondary levels, but this level can vary between schools. The Public Health Department will discuss the local situation with the Principal to determine the best course of action.

Q: Who decides if a school closure has to happen?

Public Health makes decisions about school closures related to COVID-19 or other communicable disease outbreaks.

The Board (Director of Education) may be required to close a school if safety cannot be maintained due to significant staff shortages or facility issues (e.g. Prolonged power outages).
Q. Will a school close if absences are 30% or higher?

Our goal is to keep schools open. Schools will only close if the Board cannot ensure the safety of students and staff or if the Durham Region Health Department determines a need due to an outbreak.
