The mental health and well-being of students continues to be a priority at DCDSB. This resource provides information on summer programs and resources focused on mental health promotion and prevention, as well as support for students who may need additional help due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These resources are intended to support the learning recovery and transitions of students who may find the return to school challenging due to their mental health needs. We have worked collaboratively with community partners to develop and offer virtual group programs and workshops for children, youth, and parents/caregivers, as well as a professional speaker series for parents/caregivers, focused on supporting your child’s mental health through the pandemic and their return to school.

For a list of mental health supports in Durham Region click here.

Parents and caregivers can access a tip sheet from School Mental Health Ontario to support the mental health and well-being of their child or teen through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Self Awareness and Emotional Resilience

This workshop is designed to help students continue their journey of self-discovery by providing a safe space for them to understand the basics of self-awareness, emotional resilience challenges, and solutions for their age group. It will give them the language to understand the appropriate definitions of race, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, gender, and pronouns. This discussion will also address in depth triggers such as education, family, societal, relationship, physical and mental health stressors, the unhealthy effects that poor coping habits can have and ultimately provide students with healthy techniques to manage stress. This will assist the students in developing resilience and mental toughness to manage stressors in healthy ways going forward.

Thriving, Not Just Surviving, Another Pandemic Summer

Flyer promoting Thriving, Not Just Surviving another Pandemic Summer

In this workshop, Jennifer will help parents understand that language and empathy is medicine - medicine that can reduce stress hormones and help to build emotional resilience. If we have learned anything during these crazy times, it’s that kids need “emotional shock absorbers” to be flexible and to thrive. The world opening up again can mean an increase in anxiety and can be overwhelming for some children (adults too). Learn how to use the magic of the Connected Parenting method to make this a stress free, wonderful summer for the whole family.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health Through the Impact of Racism and Oppression

Flyer promoting Supporting Your Child's Mental Health through the Impact of Racism and Oppression

We cannot promote or claim to care about Children and Youth Mental health without a focus on the impact of racism and discrimination in a world of systemic oppression. Racial injustice takes a quiet and brutal toll on the mental health of Black and Racialized families and children. The psychological stress of experiencing is too often invisible. This burden starts for racialized and specifically Black children before birth and extends across generations, and contributes to the disproportionate prevalence of untreated mental health challenges within Back communities as well as the devastation of the school-to-prison pipeline. This workshop will examine the impact of racism and oppression of racism on children and youth mental health and the invisibility of such impact.

From Zoom to Classroom: How to support your child’s social-emotional development when returning to school

Flyer promoting From Zoom to Classroom How to support your child's social-emotional development when returning to school

*Note: This workshop will have a focus on supporting children 3.8 years to 6 years old, in their social and emotional development as they enter and/or return to school and in-person social activities in September.
