Ultimate Potential Math at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School named Apple Distinguished Program

The Durham Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that Ultimate Potential (UP) Math at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished Program for 2016-2018. This specialized learning model combines best teaching practices, such as open tasks, Mathematical inquiry, and technology-based pedagogical techniques.

The Apple Distinguished Program designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate Apple’s vision of exemplary learning environments.

“This recognition speaks to the passion of our educators at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School and their leadership in developing a teaching and learning model that enables all students to succeed in Mathematics,” said Anne O’Brien, Director of Education at the Durham Catholic District School Board. “By embracing technology and adapting the UP MindShift, staff has witnessed increased confidence in students as they become enthusiastic class leaders with a new-found love of Mathematics.”

The selection of UP Math at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School as an Apple Distinguished Program highlights the school’s success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. Some of the benefits of using Apple technology in the UP Math program include:

  • promotion of equity for all students,
  • the removal of barriers to learning
  • increased student engagement
  • opportunities to promote real-world embedded rich tasks
  • cross-curricular connections, such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) tasks
  • opportunities to provide and receive timely feedback from teachers and peers
