Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) is pleased to announce the 2023 student art exhibit at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery (RMG). DCDSB’s student art show, Kaleidoscope, will be available for the public to view free-of-charge from February 24, 2023, until March 12, 2023. This year’s show features over 100 pieces of artwork created by students in Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Over 35 schools across the DCDSB submitted student work as part of the art exhibit. The art on display at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery includes sketches, paintings, clay, photography, digital art and more.

“DCDSB’s Kaleidoscope exhibit is an opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate amazing student artwork,” said Katharine Stevenson, Superintendent of Education. “We’re extremely proud of our students – this art exhibit showcases the creativity and artistic talents of Durham Catholic students from across the board.”

For Samuel A-S., a Grade 8 student at St. André Bessette Catholic School, having one of his pieces displayed at Kaleidoscope is a big accomplishment. “Art has been my passion ever since I was 5 years old. As a young, upcoming artist, it truly means the world to me to have my work displayed at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery. Having my art in this exhibit truly gives me the confidence to continue pursuing this passion of mine.”

The DCDSB has had a long-standing relationship with the RMG. The RMG has hosted an exhibit of DCDSB student art for over two decades, and both organizations are excited to be offering an in-person exhibit partnership for the first time since 2018.

“The RMG is thrilled to be able to host the DCDSB bi-annual exhibition in person again this year. The students have such immense talent and it is always such a joy to be able to celebrate their work in the gallery. I cannot wait to see the new artwork they have produced this year.” – Leila Timmins, Senior Curator at the RMG.

A wide range of mediums such as oil on canvas, sculpting, masks, watercolour, pencil, recycled art, photography, charcoal, textiles, ceramics, and fashion design are on display at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery until March 12, 2023. Visit the Gallery’s website at rmg.on.ca for hours of operation. Admission to the RMG is always free.

The DCDSB and the RMG would like to acknowledge the many dedicated educators and staff who have supported student creativity and expression, and whose efforts have gone into creating this exhibit. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all the students who had the courage to share their talents.
