“Catholic schools, which always strive to join their work of education with the explicit proclamation of the Gospel, are a most valuable resource for the evangelization of culture.” (Evangeli Gaudium, 134)
It is my pleasure to share with you the 2019-2020 annual report which celebrates the triumphs and trials of an extraordinary year in the history of Catholic education in Ontario. While we missed gathering in our schools, churches, community centres and other public facilities, I am amazed by the strength, compassion and resilience among students, families, staff, trustees, clergy, parishes and community members.
In the face of tremendous challenge, we, as a Catholic school system, maintained our commitment to Excellence, Equity and Engagement as a community that accompanies, builds relationships, encourages, instills hope and forms joyful disciples of Jesus.
We began 2020 with unprecedented labour action in education across Ontario, followed by an extended period of provincially ordered school closures as a protective measure against the spread of COVID-19. This required a collective shift from traditional school to a new mode of teaching, learning and faith development. With the cooperation of students, staff, families and clergy, we discovered innovative ways to connect and support one another while celebrating our faith, annual events, award ceremonies and graduations virtually.
I applaud our educators, leaders and support staff who responded to distance education with innovative strategies, prayer and reflection inspired by the hope of our faith traditions. Through perseverance and dedication, staff endeavoured to engage with students outside of the traditional classroom setting and equitably support each child in the continuity of learning.
During these trying times, particular attention was placed on mental health and well-being. Staff learned about trauma informed pedagogy and were given access to equity-based materials and resources to support mentally healthy learning environments.
Thank you to all members of our Catholic learning community and especially to our parents and guardians for your cooperation and collaboration throughout the 2019-2020 school year, allowing our students to build resilience and continue to learn during a global pandemic. Each of you in your own way, by your actions and perseverance have been a testament to our mission and Catholic values which embody the faith, hope and love that is highlighted throughout this report.
With faith and gratitude,
Tracy Barill
