Dramatic Arts (acting) and Vocal Music (singing) have now formally combined into a single Performing Arts major. Students in performing arts will receive equal training and experience in the areas of drama and vocal music, thus making them highly skilled, diversified, and well-rounded performers. Students will learn the foundations of acting technique, different performance and dramatic styles, music theory, choral and solo singing, and performing on stage as an actor, singer, and have the opportunity to audition to become a musical theatre performer.
Elementary:
Students will receive an introduction to a variety of dramatic forms and singing techniques, with a focus on building a collaborative creative environment and mounting a performance. Students will explore drama, learn different parts of stagecraft, and develop their vocal singing skills in both individual and choral (group) singing environments. Students will also learn how to listen perceptively while learning the language of vocal music and develop the confidence necessary to collaborate, lead, speak publicly, and perform in front of audiences.
Secondary:
In addition to the aforementioned skills learned in elementary, students will expand on those and also explore the elements of stagecraft, directing, musical theatre, film and production, vocal jazz and some songwriting, with additional emphasis on collaborative performance and the application of singing and acting for various postsecondary pathways.
Students will also learn about different acting styles, acting for stage and film, directing plays, backstage production and design, musical theatre production, writing original works, filmmaking, and how to use their creative talents to improve and serve our community.
Students will perform in Performing Arts showcases (plays and vocal concerts) in our state-of-the-art theatre facilities. They will also have the opportunity to audition for a limited number of roles as a cast member, crew member, or orchestra member in our large-scale musical theatre productions.
