DCDSB Recognized as a Leader in Sustainable Schools

DCDSB rises to 9th school board in ontario for energy efficiency

The Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) is earning provincial recognition for its commitment to sustainability and responsible energy management, and is now recognized as one of the most energy-efficient school boards in Ontario.

In the 2026 Top Energy Performing School Boards report, DCDSB ranked 9th out of 72 boards, a dramatic rise from 36th place in the previous report. This achievement places the board among Ontario’s top 10 most energy-efficient school boards and reflects years of focused effort, strategic investment, and strong operational stewardship.

Each year, school boards across Ontario report their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to the Ministry of Energy. These reports, based on the previous academic year’s data, provide a province-wide benchmark for performance. DCDSB’s impressive climb in the rankings highlights measurable progress in reducing energy use while maintaining safe, comfortable learning environments.

Driving this success is a series of intentional board-wide initiatives. Investments in building automation system (BAS) infrastructure, along with improved scheduling and sequencing, have played a key role in optimizing building performance and reducing energy use. In addition, the board has invested in high-efficiency HVAC systems and achieved 100% LED lighting implementation across all schools, contributing to reduced electricity consumption. These measures demonstrate how targeted capital renewal projects can deliver both environmental and financial benefits.

Beyond infrastructure, sustainability at Durham Catholic is also powered by student and staff engagement. Through the EcoSchools Canada certification program, schools are encouraged to take an active role in environmental stewardship. The board continues to support this initiative through shared resources, regular communication, and collaborative learning opportunities such as EcoLead professional learning workshops for staff.

In the 2025-2026 school year, 36 schools submitted environmental action plans for certification, aiming for Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, or participation-level recognition. Final results are expected later in June, with the board working toward a goal of 100% school participation and certification.

Together, these achievements reflect a board-wide commitment to being stewards of sustainability. By reducing energy consumption, investing in efficient technologies, and empowering students and staff to take environmental action, the board is demonstrating Care for God’s Creation, promoting respect for the environment, nurturing a culture of responsibility, and showing respect through stewardship of creation.
