DCDSB Secondary Students Attend the 2nd Annual Student Human Rights Conference
On Thursday, October 15, the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) welcomed 115 secondary students to the Pope Francis Centre for the 2nd Annual Student Human Rights Conference with the theme, “Human Rights in Motion: From Awareness to Action”. In addition to learning that included human rights concepts of discrimination, protected Code grounds, protection from retaliation and allyship, students were invited to collaborate and share their thoughts on making DCDSB schools more inclusive and accepting spaces for all. Participants dissected case studies to further expand their knowledge on effective advocacy in their schools while also identifying ways to stop, disrupt, heal, and act when harmful incidents involving racism and discrimination occur. At the end of the day, students were able to discuss next steps with their classmates including integrating their ideas within their schools, changes they want to see, partners they want to work with, and their human rights and equity commitments.
