Forged by Fire: Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Hosts Black History Month Celebration

Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School marked Black History Month with a dynamic and inspiring presentation titled Forged by Fire, led by Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School alumnus and firefighter Jay Hayles. Returning to his former school, Mr. Hayles delivered an interactive and impactful experience that inspired students, staff, and community leaders.

 

His presentation explored powerful themes at the heart of the Black experience, including:

  • Resilience
  • Identity
  • Overcoming adversity
  • Leadership and purpose

Through personal storytelling, reflection, and audience engagement, Mr. Hayles shared how his own journey, which has been marked by challenge, determination, and faith, shaped the person and professional he is today. His message encouraged students to recognize their inner strength, embrace their identity, and rise above obstacles with courage and purpose.

The event was honoured by the presence of several distinguished community leaders, including:

  • Marisa Hall – Vice-Chair of the Board & Trustee for the Town of Ajax
  • Sterling Lee – Deputy Mayor and Regional Ward 2 Councillor for the Town of Ajax
  • Granville Anderson – Regional Councillor Wards 1 and 2 for the Municipality of Clarington
  • Sean Carter – Detective, Durham Regional Police Service
  • Amanda Camacho – Clinical Director, Refreshing Waters Psychotherapy (Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Alumni)
  • Mark Larry – Business Coach & Business Person of the Year
  • Carl Carter – Owner, Apex Health & Fitness

Their attendance underscored the strong community partnership and shared commitment to supporting youth, celebrating Black excellence, and promoting leadership development within local schools.

 

The Forged by Fire event not only highlighted the contributions and lived experiences of Black Canadians but also empowered students to reflect on their own potential, reminding them that ‘the sky is the limit’.

 

Notre Dame Catholic Secondary continues to celebrate Black History, Excellence and Joy with initiatives that uplift voices, educate students, and reinforce the values of equity, inclusion, and community.
