St. John Paul II Catholic School Creates a Welcoming Environment with the Silly Goose Club

St. John Paul II Catholic School has created a special initiative that encourages students to be themselves and help others, while also integrating literacy and inclusion.

The initiative started at the beginning of the school year when the school community recognized International Literacy Day. Every student received a special backpack keychain welcoming them as a member of the Silly Goose Club. The club encourages all members of our school community to:

  • Try their best
  • Help others
  • Learn from mistakes
  • Include everyone
  • Keep trying
  • Have fun learning

The message connected beautifully to the 2026-2027 spiritual theme, Shining Our Light, and the lessons geese teach us about teamwork, perseverance, leadership, and caring for one another. Many students enjoyed the read-aloud Silly Goose Goes Back to School by Lindsay Marcos, which sparked conversations about friendship, confidence, and belonging.

One of the highlights was inviting students to help name the school porch goose. After receiving many thoughtful submissions, the school goose was officially named Gander. Several junior students shared that the name reminded them of the people of Gander, Newfoundland, who opened their homes and hearts to stranded travellers following the events of 9/11, ensuring visitors had food, shelter, and care during a difficult time. The school staff was touched by these reflections on kindness, compassion, and service to others.

Adding to the fun, St. John Paul II Catholic School educator Mrs. Caruso, curated a wonderful wardrobe for Gander that helps celebrate school spirit throughout the year. Gander now sports outfits that connect to various spirit days and special events, including country-themed attire, a raincoat for wet weather, and a purple school spirit shirt featuring our school logo every Wednesday. Students eagerly check each day to see what Gander is wearing, and the goose has quickly become a beloved member of the St. John Paul II Catholic School community.

Through assemblies and classroom discussions, students have continued to explore Catholic virtues such as empathy, kindness, inclusion, and what it means to be a shining light for others. The enthusiasm surrounding Gander and the Silly Goose Club has brought smiles, laughter, and a strong sense of community to the school. Teachers have added geese to their classrooms as Gander friends and lessons have been carried out in Science.

Geese fly in a V-formation to support one another and conserve energy, and no goose is ever left behind. By sharing leadership and looking out for each member of the flock, they provide a wonderful metaphor for community, kindness, and the importance of caring for others.

There has been lots of joy from this goose theme and St. John Paul II Catholic School looks forward to building on that positive energy as the year continues.
