St. Monica Catholic School Student Shines at Black History Month Conference
Leslie L., a Grade 7 student from St. Monica Catholic School, has earned regional recognition after winning the Artwork Competition at the 11th Annual Looking Back Into the Future Black History Month Conference. The event took place on February 7, 2026, at the St. Francis Centre for Community, Arts and Culture in Ajax.
The conference, which was founded and hosted by Channon Oyeniran, an author and former Durham Catholic parent, has become an annual celebration of Black history, culture, and achievement in Durham Region. The event aims to deepen understanding of Black history and highlight the significant contributions of Black Canadians.
Leslie’s artwork was showcased during the conference, which brought together students, educators, community members, and local leaders for a meaningful day of learning, discussion, and celebration. Her accomplishment was a proud moment for St. Monica Catholic School, reflecting the God-given talents and active engagement of young people contributing to these important conversations.
This year’s gathering was particularly special, as attendees had the opportunity to hear from the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine, a former Member of Parliament (MP) who more than 30 years ago championed the motion that officially recognized Black History Month in Canada.
Leslie’s creativity and thoughtful artwork embodied the conference theme: honouring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring the future.
