Building Capacity in Structured Literacy: Success from Our After School Book Club

As part of ongoing efforts to support the implementation of the new language curriculum with a focus on structured literacy, the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) held a professional learning initiative focused on foundational literacy skills, evidence-based instructional strategies, and strengthening Tier 1 instruction. Educators dove into the powerful book 7 Mighty Moves, which provides full or practical strategies to strengthen structured literacy approaches and create engaging, supportive classroom environments.

Following the session, facilitators received inspiring feedback from participants that highlighted the immediate impact of this work. Participants said that when implementing the learning into the classrooms their students were very engaged, and some students even sent PowerPoints to their teachers with information on what they learned. This feedback showcased how the strategies introduced in the session sparked curiosity, engagement, and enthusiasm within DCDSB classrooms.
