DCDSB Grade 9 Students Get to Work

On November 1 Grade 9 students across the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) took part in Take Our Kids to Work Day, an annual career exploration event where participants experience a day in the life of a working professional.

Linked with the career component of the Grade 9 curriculum, students had the opportunity to gather information on the realities of work, as well as employment opportunities and entry requirements, while also strengthening the link between home, school and the community.

Of their experiences, students had the following to say:

  • “During Take Our Kids to Work Day, I got the opportunity to visit my dad’s office and get an insight into his job. The experience has given me a much greater understanding and appreciation for my dad’s job. I learned that he works in a branch of the Ministry of Labour, which I discovered is very important since the Ministry ensures the overall safety of the public and prevents any death or issues with health and safety. I also toured the Legislative Office and met the Minister of Labour, David Piccini. Overall, Take Our Kids to Work Day was a great Interactive experience.”

  • “On Take Our Kids to Work Day, I had the opportunity to spend a day at KPMG in Toronto. KPMG is one of Canada's biggest professional services companies, and we learned what consulting is and how employees help clients find solutions to their challenges. I enjoyed being in downtown Toronto and meeting many great people at KPMG.”

  • “In general, I think that Take Our Kids to Work Day was fun. While visiting Celestica, I learned many new things about robotics and manufacturing. I also got to participate in fun activities and made some friends. All in all, I believe that Take Our Kids to Work Day is a really fun, informative and important experience.”
