Enhancing Numeracy Skills at Welding Camp
During the month of July, Durham Catholic District School Board offered an enhanced Welding Camp for students to develop numeracy skills, by introducing participants to basic welding techniques used in many trades.
Hosted at Monseigneur Paul Dwyer C.S. and St. Mary C.S.S., by St. Mary Technology Teacher Vince Sorbilli, the students worked with hand and power tools and learned welding techniques, while also using math and science through fabrication and welding. In addition, they learned basic automotive service skills as a means of applying their newly acquired skills, and made a campfire roasting stick and cow bell as their take-home projects.
“Students had an opportunity to build metal projects from scratch,” said Mr. Sorbilli. “It allowed them to experience a sense of accomplishment.”
Funding for the welding camp was provided by the Canadian Welding Bureau and Specialist High School Major.
Of their experience Ben. C, a Grade 8 student from St. Isaac Jogues C.S. said, “I liked having an opportunity to make things. My favourite thing to learn was the gas welding.”
Please note: Mr. Sorbilli is also looking for used vehicle donations to the St. Mary Transportation Technology program for students to use for educational purposes. A tax receipt will be provided for any used vehicle donations. Anyone with questions or a vehicle to donate can email Vince.Sorbilli@dcdsb.
