Learning About Treaties in NBE3U
Recently Grade 11 students in the NBE3U class (Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices) at Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School engaged in multifaceted learning about treaties in Canada. They examined what treaties are, explored historic and modern treaties, and reviewed disagreements that have arisen over treaties. Students then read Treaty Words, by Aimée Craft to better understand treaties.
Students were assigned a differentiated project to explore treaties in their own way. They were asked to investigate specific treaties, treaty violations, or ceded and unceded land through the creation of infographics, art, or video essays, as a way to reflect on treaty rights and the concept of the saying, "we are all treaty people".
