Literacy Intervention Teachers at Durham Catholic District School Board
Recently, the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) introduced six Literacy Intervention Teachers. These educators took on the critical task of assessing Year 2 Kindergarten to Grade 2 students to establish baseline early reading screening data. This data, alongside EQAO results, guided the Literacy Intervention team in providing targeted interventions and building Tier 1 instructional capacity through the UFLI program, which is an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading.
The impact of this initiative was nothing short of transformative. The feedback received from DCDSB educators showcased the profound difference the Literacy Intervention Teachers are making—not only in student outcomes but also in supporting educators in adopting structured literacy practices. The growth observed in students and the collaboration cultivated with classroom teachers demonstrated the effectiveness of this role. We look forward to seeing its continued impact on literacy success in our schools!
