Mrs. Wheeler's Weekly Update- January 9, 2023

THE WEEKLY UPDATE – January 9th , 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School:

As we launch the 2023 year from Seton, a profound wish that every member of our school family has a year of health, happiness and a deepening connection to our Savour Jesus Christ. While I do my best to keep The Weekly Update to a page, this edition will go a bit longer, as there are a number of updates to share.

The Feast Day of St. Elizabeth Seton

The Church celebrates the Feast Day of our Patroness, St. Elizabeth Seton, on January 4th. As we were not back at school on that day, we come together on January 18th for a Liturgy to honour St. Elizabeth Seton, and there will be a celebratory treat for every student. Parents will be most welcome to attend. The Liturgy for FDK-Gr.4/5 will be at 12 pm and at 1:30 for Grades 5-8.

Weekly Pizza and Healthy Hunger at Seton

Our Secretary Mrs. Gough has updated the Cash-On-Line for Pizza, with our first Pizza Day for 2023 occurring on January 11th. Healthy Hunger will resume on January 19th and you can pre-order up until the end of February.

Basketball Free Throw – Knights of Columbus

On the Thursday prior to Christmas, a letter was sent home with all students ages 9-14 as of January 1st. The Knights of Columbus are resuming their tradition of hosting Knights of Columbus Free Throws at schools associated with Saint Isaac Jogues Catholic Church. The Knights will be at Seton on January 11th. The gym was in great demand in the weeks before Christmas with Advent Liturgies and Christmas Concerts, and some classes have had a chance to run the qualifying , optional drills during gym class. Many however, have understandably not had a chance to do so, please check with your child. If he/she has not had a chance to qualify, please return the form that was sent home in hard copy ( attached again for your convenience) either on Monday or Tuesday morning. Please don’t worry about the section of the form that references how you are proving the age of your child – we have that information in Verification Forms you have previously submitted for this year. Please check with myself or Mr. Canning should you require clarification.

Registration for Year One, Full Day Kindergarten, 2023/2024 Academic Year ( please note that students currently in Year One do not need to register for Year Two)

Kindergarten registration will open Thursday, January 12, 2023. Parents/Guardians will complete the application by going to https://osas.dcdsb.ca/Account/Home, which can be accessed from www.dcdsb.ca. Please contact our School Secretaries, Mrs. Gough or Mrs. Visco should you have any questions or require support.

Registration for French Immersion, Grade One - a reminder that the deadline is January 20th, 2023. Please go to our Board website, www.dcdsb.ca for details.

Return to School and the daily self-screening Please see the enclosed link for the daily selfscreening. Thank you for your continued vigilance, collectively we can keep our school as healthy as possible. https://www.ontario.ca/school-screening/

See/Hear Clinic, School Screening Association – coming to Seton on January 18th, 2023 The School Screening Association visits schools in the Durham Catholic District School Board for annual screening clinics, with a recommendation of yearly screening. The screening clinic helps identify possible hearing issues. As part of their program, and results not deemed in the normal range will be referred to the parents for further testing. Two ways to have your child’s hearing tested are :

• Talk to your doctor and ask for a referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist ( Ololaryngolost), covered by OHIP

• Make an appointment with an Audiologist – referral through your family doctor is not required but if the Audiologist is not in a hospital clinic, the visit may not be covered by OHIP

The School Screening Association charges $20 per child to offset the cost of bringing this clinic to schools. Should you wish your child to be screened, please complete the enclosed form and return it to your child’s teacher NO LATER than Monday January 16th. Should you require a hard copy of the form, please contact our School Office and a form will be sent home with your student.

Lastly, it looks like more seasonal weather may be upon us, so please wear your winter gear for tomorrow’s return.

God bless our Seton Family,

N. Wheeler
