Mrs. Wheeler's Weekly Update - June 5th, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School,

On this past Thursday, we raised the Rainbow Flag at Seton to recommit ourselves to creating a safer and more welcoming environment for all members of our school community. As Catholics, we are called to love one another. We believe every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and should always be treated with dignity, compassion, and sensitivity. In Hebrew Scripture, God used a rainbow as a covenant with God’s people:

God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. – Genesis 9:12-13

A Covenant represents the intimate relationship God has with humanity. We are bound together and belong to each other to the point we are incomplete when not in relationship. During the Month of June, we also honour the Sacred Heart. The Feast Day of the Sacred Heart is June 16th. We will be doing a daily Novena for the 9 school days leading up to the Feast Day. At our Council Meeting last week, I shared this slide concerning Novenas:

A Novena is an ancient form of prayer in the Catholic tradition, consisting of nine consecutive days of prayer leading up to a particular Feast Day where a particular blessing or grace is sought. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a long-standing tradition.

The Durham Catholic District School Board has announced summer STEM Camp opportunities for Black Students and I wanted to share this as amazing opportunity as well. Theses free camps are open to students are currently in grade 7 & 8 and grade 9 &10. They are being offered in partnership with Ontario Tech University, MacMaster University and Queen’s University.
