St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Celebrates Tamil Heritage Month

The Tamil Student Association at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School (pictured left to right : Visacan, Jevisha, Pranavi, Chaaru, and Mrs. Tharshan) planned many initiatives and events to celebrate Tamil Heritage Month throughout January. The Tamil Student Association created a display at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School that included Tamil heritage clothing and artifacts. In this picture you can see a poster and significant items that are used to represent Tamil heritage, including:

  • Kuthu Vellaku (gold and silver pots and stands), Deepams (orange pot with the candles), Kuthu Vellaku (gold and silver items), Malai (orange and white flowers)
  • Vetti Settai (Tamil traditional clothing for males)
  • Sari (Tamil traditional clothing for females)

All of these items are used and worn for special events that take place in Tamil heritage such as weddings, teething ceremonies, and engagements.
