Summer Learning Program - Summer Rays

Mr. O'Neill, Superintendent of Education, Mr. Goff, Principal, and Ms. Brown, Vice-Principal, provided the Board of Trustees with an overview of the 2023 Summer Learning Program. DCDSB's Summer Rays program was free and designed to serve students who may benefit from additional small group instruction in literacy and numeracy.

From July 4-27, 2023, the Summer Rays Learning Program provided 75 hours of instruction to over 270 students. The students who participated were in Year 2 Kindergarten through to Grade 3, and instruction was provided for English and French Immersion students. Student participants were selected by school principals and teachers, with a particular focus on students who would benefit from consolidation of foundational skills and concepts.

Literacy instruction focused on evidence-based instructional tools aimed at closing reading gaps. Numeracy instruction focused on foundational skill, but also included the use of robotics and coding to inspire interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Students also participated in experiential learning activities and excursions within the local community.

The 2023 Summer Rays program also featured an extensive home-school partnership, including an open house for parents, community supports and a brief progress report for each student highlighting the academic success of the students at the conclusion of this program.
