Report Cards & Transcripts
Report Cards
The main goal of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. Growing Success, Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting in Ontario Schools, acknowledges that assessment of learning is key to a student's engagement and success.
Report cards occur at certain points in the school year. While communication about a student's learning and progress should happen on an ongoing basis via:
- parent-teacher or parent-student-teacher conferences;
- portfolios of student work;
- student-led conferences;
- interviews;
- phones calls;
- checklists; and/or
- informal reports.
Formal communication by report cards happens three times during a school year. All students in Grades 1 to 12 receive a fall progress report card and two provincial report cards - one in mid-winter and the other at the end of the school year.
Distribution of Provincial Report Cards
The Provincial secondary report cards are sent home electronically on the following dates:
- Semester 1 Midterm Report - November 7, 2025
- Semester 1 Final Report - February 6, 2026
- Semester 2 Midterm Report -April 16, 2026

Secondary Final Exam Requirements
Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, most secondary courses will require written exams to account for a percentage of the final course mark. Written exams are to take place during the designated exam period in the school year calendar. Exams for online courses will be written in-person at each student’s home school.
The following courses are exempt from mandatory written exams. In these courses, student learning will be assessed through in‑class culminating tasks (i.e., projects, presentations, and portfolios):
Exempt by Course Type
- Grades 9 and 10 Locally Developed Compulsory Credits (LDCC)
- Grades 11 and 12 Workplace Level Courses (E courses)
- Grades 11 and 12 Open Level Courses (O courses)
Exempt by Subject Area
- Guidance and Career Education
- Co-operative Education
- Interdisciplinary Studies
- American Sign Language as a Second Language
Attendance and Participation in Class
Secondary students’ final grades will also reflect their attendance and participation in class in recognition of the significant impact these have on achievement. Excused absences will not negatively affect a student’s mark.
- In Grades 9 and 10, a student’s final mark will be based on:
- 65% classroom work
- 20% final evaluations
- 15% attendance and participation
- In Grades 11 and 12, a student’s final mark will be based on:
- 65% classroom work
- 25% final evaluations
- 10% attendance and participation
Further details on the mandatory exam, attendance and participation policies can be found at Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting in Ontario Schools.
Transcripts
The Ontario Student Transcript (OST) is an official record of a student's academic credits earned at the secondary school level in the Province of Ontario. Students and parents can request a transcript for many reasons such as post-secondary institutions, apprenticeships, and employers.
Contact the Guidance Department of the secondary school you last attended to request a transcript. Indicate your full name, date of birth, the year you graduated, and your contact phone number.
Please note we do not send transcripts to third-party recipients.
If you will not be the person picking up the transcript, please advise who will be doing so on your behalf. Please allow three (3) business days for processing.
All secondary schools keep student transcripts for 55 years.
