In recognition of Black History Month, the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School’s student-led Unity Committee hosted two special events to promote Black culture and excellence.

First was the Taste of Black Culture Food Festival. Held during the school’s two lunch periods, food items from across the African Diaspora, which were prepared by students and staff, were available for purchase. Dishes included jerk chicken, jollof rice, chin chin, patties and toto (coconut cake). Students also had a chance to spin the wheel and answer questions about Black history to win a ticket for a giant cookie raffle!

Second was a Fashion Show featuring ethnic cultural wear, donated, and modeled by the students.

The Unity Committee at St. Mary’s is dedicated to creating a safer and more welcoming community for everyone regardless of race/ethnicity, religion, gender identity and sexual orientation. Unity addresses all forms of discrimination especially anti-Black racism.
