We are committed to cultivating a positive sense of self, nurturing a culture of high expectations and curiosity in mathematics, while providing our students with the problem-solving approaches and skills needed to engage with the world around them. As we build on our board's commitments of excellence, equity and engagement, we support the goal of the Ontario mathematics curriculum “to provide all students with the foundational skills required to:
understand the importance of and appreciate the beauty of mathematics;
recognize and appreciate multiple mathematical perspectives;
make informed decisions and contribute fully to their own lives and to today’s competitive global community;
adapt to changes and synthesize new ideas;
work both independently and collaboratively to creatively approach challenges;
communicate effectively;
think critically and creatively and see connections to other disciplines beyond mathematics, such as other STEM disciplines.”
One of the best ways parents and guardians can help their children do well in Math is to adopt a positive attitude towards the subject. Talk about how you use Math in your jobs, around the house, on road trips, buying groceries, paying taxes, budgeting, and doing home improvements. Look for opportunities to get your children to measure things such as ingredients for baking, materials for building, their height and their weight.
To build and reinforce the appreciation and beauty of mathematics, make note of the way math presents itself in nature, architecture and technology. Consider playing games and doing puzzles with your children.
