Be You, Be Well: A Black Mental Health Day Event

Posted On Tuesday March 19, 2024

On Monday, March 4, DCDSB held its fourth annual Black Mental Health Day event to recognize the ongoing impact on mental health that results from experiences of anti-Black racism and to raise awareness of the specific mental health needs of Black communities. The event was a success thanks to our keynote speaker, Roxanne Francis and panelists Trudy Stone, Joy Lapps and Karrianne Edwards from the Women’s Multicultural Counselling Centre.

A big thank you goes out to all of the students who helped bring student voices to the event:

  • The Aspiring Black Students Led by Excellence (ABLE Group) from Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School who presented an artistic piece highlighting microaggressions.
  • Cassandra P. from St. Theresa Catholic School who wrote and read the prayer.
  • Rowan G. from Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School for their art exhibit.
  • Jayalee H. from Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School for their art exhibit.
  • Alex N. from Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School for their support with the technology

A special thank you also goes to the staff team that volunteered their time to bring this event together: Mr. Azevedo, Ms. Awoleye, Ms. Jeffers, Mr. Washington, Ms. MacNeil, Mr. Hannelas, Ms. Kay and Ms. Pereira. It is because of their passion and commitment that the event was such a success!
