Elementary students across the Durham Catholic District School Board are participating in Daily Physical Activity sessions provided by the City of Oshawa’s Recreation and Culture Services Branch. Program staff have been hosting live virtual 15-minute sessions geared towards students. These Daily Physical Activity sessions are adapted for use in a classroom or home environment, where space may be limited.

Each 15-minute session has a theme, such as Zumba, Physical Literacy, Muscle Movement, Dance and Movement, and Introduction to CPR.

Students from our Durham Catholic Virtual Elementary School have particularly enjoyed participating in these fun movement breaks. “I like the City of Oshawa movement sessions because there are different types of dancing. I like how they play music, and they make me ready to start the day” said Peyton B., Grade 6 student at the Durham Catholic Virtual Elementary School.

Recreation and Culture Services staff offered 60 sessions between February 16 – March 11, 2021. Approximately 35 classes per day participated, which amounted to 700 students per day! Over 12,000 students participated in these daily movement sessions over the past four weeks.

“We want to thank the City of Oshawa for offering these sessions to our students. Our school communities can incorporate these sessions into their daily learning and offer a different, exciting way to ensure students remain active and focused on healthy living” said Mariah O’Reilly, Superintendent of Education at the Durham Catholic District School Board.
