May is Asian and South Asian Heritage Month

Posted On Monday May 01, 2023

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, and South Asian Heritage Month in Ontario. This is a time to reflect on and learn more about the many achievements and contributions of Canadians of Asian heritage.

The theme for 2023 is "Stories of Determination” which was announced by Minister Hussen. The theme represents the strides made and the challenges overcome by Asian communities to thrive in Canada over the last two centuries and beyond.

Asian Heritage Month has been celebrated since the 1990s. In December 2001, the Senate of Canada adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to announce May as Asian Heritage Month.

This month gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the many achievements and contributions the Asian communities have made to the fabric of our society. It is a time for us to recognize their impact and honour their resilience, hard work and dedication in enriching our diverse society.
