paints of Indigenous dot artOn Thursday, November 28 students in Grades 4 to 8 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School rotated to four different Indigenous workshops to learn more about Indigenous culture. Students tried their hands at drumming and singing Indigenous songs and dot art. They also listened to Indigenous storytelling and learned how to speak Ojibway. A special thank you to members of DCDSB’s Indigenous Education Advisory Circle for sharing their culture and traditions with our students.

Male and female students talking to adults in French at a tableThis morning, Grade 8 students at St. John Bosco Catholic School met with seniors from the Oshawa Senior Citizens Centre to talk in French. The adults and Core French students discussed in French activities they like to do that brings them joy.
The interactive experience is an opportunity for the students to strengthen their French conversation skills in a fun way.

Three female students working behind the movie cameraOn Wednesday, November 27, 2019 Durham Catholic secondary students had an opportunity to attend a Film Industry Career Fair to learn more about the jobs available in the growing film and television industry. Students heard from a panel of industry experts on the opportunities available to them in the field and how their careers have grown.
The film industry offers employment and apprenticeship opportunities in a number of areas such as:

Male adult talking to the students about his tradeThis morning, students in Grade 7 and 8 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School had an opportunity to talk to a Carpenter about his trade. James, is a carpenter who started an apprenticeship following graduation from secondary school.
“I took Tech classes in high school and enjoyed working with my hands,” said James. “That led to a Carpentry Apprenticeship where I trained as an apprentice for three years, while learning on the job and being paid.”
