During the 2020-2021 school year, the Board used Ministry of Education funding and its existing reserves to lower class sizes and enhance safety measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This provided the board with the ability to secure staffing and resources to open the Durham Catholic Virtual Elementary and Secondary school. The funding also allowed the board to pivot from in-person to remote learning throughout the school year in response to the pandemic.
The 2020-2021 budget included $263.9 million of operating expenditure and $35.3 million of capital expenditure for a total of $299.2 million. The budget is balanced and is compliant with the financial requirements of the Education Act. The following chart provides a breakdown of expenditure by category for the 2020-2021 school year. Actual results for the 2020-2021 fiscal year also met the Ministry of Education’s reporting requirements. In addition, the board’s external auditor provided an unqualified report regarding the 2020-2021 audited financial statements.
