Literacy supports for elementary schools was centred on the newly revised (2024) Language Grade 1 to Grade 8 Curriculum. Support of the new curriculum involved professional development for teachers and the purchase of evidence-based reading intervention resources, such as the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) foundations toolbox, and/or the Lexia learning program.
A universal reading screener was also administered to all students from Year 2 Kindergarten – Grade 3, measuring student’s foundational reading skills. Based on these reading assessment results, six literacy intervention teachers were deployed to work with over 110 at-risk students who were below benchmark in Grade 2, providing intensive, daily, targeted, reading instruction over a 14 week period. A follow up assessment indicated that 81% of students who were below the Grade 2 benchmark in the first screener, achieved the middle of Grade 2 benchmark by the end of this intervention block, resulting in a reduction in basic fundamental reading gaps by half a year or greater.
The focus in secondary schools in the 2023-2024 school year was the implementation of the new destreamed Grade 9 Language curriculum, including training for staff and the use of nine destreamed intervention teachers who worked with students in these destreamed courses. This resulted in increased student confidence in literacy as demonstrated by a 6% increase in the number of students across the board who selected Grade 10 English Academic courses the following year in comparison to the number of students who enrolled in Academic Language courses prior to the introduction of destreaming.
