Pathways to Student Success

Highlights and accomplishments from Student Success include:

  • Celebrating and establishing many community partnerships, including LiUNA Local 183, Supporting Ontario Youth (SOY), Habitat for Humanity, CWB Welding Foundation, Region of Durham, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Ontario Tech University and Durham College.
  • Increased opportunities for students and families to learn more about the skilled trades and apprenticeship pathway including an after-school welding program, Level Up! Skilled Trades Career Fair, Ontario Skills Competition and Trade Days at Durham College.
  • An affiliation agreement with the Region of Durham for co-op placements at their four long-term care facilities was created to expand the variety of placement opportunities for students in Grade 11 and 12.
  • In preparation for the implementation of the new Grade 9 and 10 Technological Studies course requirement, secondary schools increased course offerings for regular and summer school programming, as well as made enhancements to school facilities.

Adult and Continuing Education

The 2023-24 school year saw significant achievements in adult education, with 306 students earning their Ontario Secondary School Diploma—a 46% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 170 students obtained certificates through the Personal Support Worker, Child Care Assistant and Custodial Services Training Programs.

During the summer of 2024, Continuing Education supported 2915 students pursuing secondary credits, including students who participated in four Travel for Credit options, and 1650 elementary students who enhanced their literacy and numeracy skills through various camp offerings, including a new multi-sports camp collaboration with the DCDSB Coach/Advocates for Black Students. Arch. Anthony Meagher CCEC became an approved training partner with the Canadian Red Cross Society and is preparing to offer lifesaving courses to DCDSB staff, students, and the community.

Alternative Education

Enrolment at our student engagement programs ,such as the Centre for Success, doubled in size for the 2023-2024 school year. The board’s Reconnect program continued to grow, and a new classroom in Oshawa was opened during the school year. Throughout 2023-2024, both the Centre for Success and Reconnect program reached the maximum enrolment capacity.

We also celebrated the inaugural year of Project SEARCH Durham Region. Project SEARCH provides career exploration and employability skills development for students with mild intellectual disabilities. 10 internship placements were developed with community partners at the Abilities Centre and the Region of Durham.

We invite you to learn more about the strategic goals and actions accomplished in our 2023-2024 Year-End Report.
