About Mike
Mike O’Neill is the Superintendent of Education responsible for Academic Services which includes instructional leadership and professional development in Literacy, Numeracy, French, STEM and Outdoor Education. Secondary School eLearning, new teacher development and Early Learning Partnerships are also amongst his portfolios. He shares responsibility for the East Family of Schools with Superintendent Wilson.
Mike was humbly born in the small town of Hespeler (right beside the hockey stick factory!), attending the University of Western Ontario and embarking on a limited and, luckily for the audiences, a short time as an actor and comedian realizing he could have a more successful career acting on a stage every day as a teacher. Mike then went on to receive his Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa and a Master's degree in International Leadership. Mike started his career with DCDSB as a Kindergarten and Grade 6 teacher in Ajax schools and has worked in education for 29 years. A passion for instructional leadership led him to work at the system level as a language arts and math consultant for several years. Mike was a principal and vice principal at the elementary and secondary level for 13 years and was recognized in 2013 as Canada’s Outstanding Principal. Mike has been a strong advocate for restorative practice in education as he believes that building relationships and making connections are a necessary precursor to learning. He is a presenter both nationally and provincially in leadership and restorative practice. He is an executive member of the Ontario Elearning Consortium and has been involved in community through the Knights of Columbus and the John Howard Society.
Mike enjoys travelling to music festivals, concerts and outdoor activities, where you can find him on the golf course or on the water; sometimes fishing and sometimes searching for his golf balls! Mike’s greatest pride, however, remains his two children, both DCDSB graduates.
