The Grade 12 Business Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School spent the afternoon with the Franchise Owner and Kitchen Manager of Charlie Ronick's in Whitby. Students had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the challenges and opportunities facing today's small businesses. Questions about target markets, customer dynamics and promotion were shared and further explored with group presentations. The Owner, who currently owns nine restaurants, was very hospitable and the Manager was very inspiring, with his high level of achievement at such a young age. Students enjoyed learning about the complexities of the restaurant industry, commenting that the event was a fun and interesting way to learn about "real business".
SHSM is a specialized high school program that allows students to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and focus their learning on a specific economic sector at the same time. If you would like to learn more about the SHSM programs offered in your secondary school, please contact your Guidance department.
