From the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Facilities Services department have been instrumental in the implementation of health and safety protocols for enhanced cleaning and ventilation in our schools. With provincial funding the board was able to purchase masks and personal protective equipment, develop directional and physical distancing signage, enhance cleaning practices, and improve air flow. Facilities Services staff were essential in ensuring high touch points were regularly disinfected for the health and safety of students and staff.
During the 2020-2021 school year, we received over $7M in combined funding from the Ministry of Education and Government of Canada (COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream) to make COVID-19 infrastructure improvements to our schools for items such as installation of mechanical systems, new windows to improve air quality and HEPA filters.
Despite challenges and construction delays experienced throughout the 2020-2021 school year, our Facilities Services department established a staff visioning committee for the new Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School to be built in north Oshawa. The committee and members of the community provided ideas and suggestions on the values and traditions that are most important to the school community. Some common themes that emerged were the development of a STEM program, arts, sports, and keeping the school's sense of community.
Superintendent of Facilities, Maintenance and Custodial Services, Mr. Scott Grieve shares highlights from the
