Our Vision Services department provides support for students who are blind or have low vision at both the elementary and secondary level. Our staff work with the school, student and parent(s) or guardian(s), Student Services department and community resources to best meet a student's needs by:
- sharing report regarding a student's vision;
- providing academic support strategies and suggest accommodations;
- assisting with the development of an Individual Education Plan (IEP);
- providing school staff with in-services on the use of equipment;
- communicating with parents(s) or guardians(s); and
- liaising with community agencies.
Services Provided
We provide the following services:
- our resource teacher for Vision Services may provide direct service through classroom visits, resource withdrawal or monitoring or provide consultation.
- itinerant teachers provide direct service with emphasis on supporting regular class curriculum with the inclusion of alternative programs as required.
Alternative areas
Alternative areas may include:
- Braille literacy;
- tactile skills'
- visual efficiency skills;
- social interaction skills;
- use of assistive technology;
- recreation and leisure skills; and
- career education.
Orientation and Mobility Specialist
Our Orientation and Mobility specialist may provide direct instruction to teach orientation to the environment and travel skills. Skill areas may include the use of the following:
- visual efficiency skills;
- sighted guide technique;
- white canes;
- dog guides;
- electronic travel aids;
- protective techniques;
- auditory localization skills;
- orientation and familiarization skills; and
- public transportation.
