CABS Promoting Black Excellence
The Coach/Advocates for Black Students (CABS) always celebrate and promote Black Excellence within the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB). They do this through student-led groups, community building events and CABS excursions.
Student-Led Groups
CABS staff organize and facilitates Black student-led groups. Examples include:
- ABLE (Aspiring Black Students Led by Excellence) at Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School in Ajax
- BEST (Black Excellence Student Team) at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax
- BLOSM (Black Leaders of St. Mary) at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering
These groups focus on:
- Planning and implementing school community-building activities, informed by student voice
- Organizing and participating in culturally relevant excursions
- Identifying possible solutions to issues that impact students
Community Building Events
School-wide events, which are often led by the CABS student groups, promote cultural awareness, and a sense of community and belonging. Examples include:
- Multicultural wear celebrations
- Socasize
- Movie nights celebrating Black excellence
- Cultural bake sales
- Performances by Black artists
CABS Excursions
Throughout the year, CABS coordinates a variety of student excursions, including trips to explore:
- Post-secondary intuitions (i.e. colleges, universities, apprenticeships)
- Future career pathways (i.e., medical field, engineering, trades, science)
- Culturally relevant experiences
