Hearing Services

Our Hearing Services department provides support for students who are deaf or hard of hearing at both our elementary and secondary levels. We enhance and improve a student's access to school curriculum in an inclusive environment through auditory means when possible.

Our Goal

Our department's goal is to enhance the following skills for students:

  • academics;
  • articulation;
  • auditory management;
  • communication strategies;
  • language;
  • listening;
  • self-advocacy;
  • self-esteem;
  • social skills; and
  • vocabulary development.

Identification

The needs of a student with a hearing loss are identified through:

  • an audiogram from the student's audiologist;
  • information from parent(s) or guardians(s) and appropriate school staff;
  • information or reports from other external sources (e.g. Infant Hearing Program, provincial schools, or outside audiological clinics.)

Services Provided

Our qualified teachers of Hearing Services provide regular direct service through classroom visits, resource withdrawal and/or monitoring as needed. We provide school staff with support so they better understand the impact of hearing loss. This may include:

  • information sessions;
  • classroom strategies;
  • workshops;
  • assisting with classroom amplification and assistive technology;
  • programming; and
  • assistance with the Individual Education Plan.

Students who are deaf or hard of hearing may also receive support by a consulting Educational Audiologist.

Students may be considered for a placement at Provincial Schools if American Sign Language is the main mode of communication.
