The Coach/Advocates for Black Students (CABS) always celebrate and promote Black Excellence within the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB). They do this through student-led groups, community building events and CABS excursions.

Student-Led Groups

CABS staff organize and facilitates Black student-led groups. Examples include:

  • ABLE (Aspiring Black Students Led by Excellence) at Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School in Ajax
  • BEST (Black Excellence Student Team) at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax
  • BLOSM (Black Leaders of St. Mary) at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering

These groups focus on:

  • Planning and implementing school community-building activities, informed by student voice
  • Organizing and participating in culturally relevant excursions
  • Identifying possible solutions to issues that impact students

Community Building Events

School-wide events, which are often led by the CABS student groups, promote cultural awareness, and a sense of community and belonging. Examples include:

  • Multicultural wear celebrations
  • Socasize
  • Movie nights celebrating Black excellence
  • Cultural bake sales
  • Performances by Black artists

CABS Excursions

Throughout the year, CABS coordinates a variety of student excursions, including trips to explore:

  • Post-secondary intuitions (i.e. colleges, universities, apprenticeships)
  • Future career pathways (i.e., medical field, engineering, trades, science)
  • Culturally relevant experiences
