Our Child and Youth Counsellors have expertise in behaviour management and work with students and school staff to promote social, emotional and mental well-being. The need for a Child and Youth Counsellor is determine through a school team meeting involving:
- parent(s) or guardian(s);
- student (if appropriate);
- school personnel; and the
- Child and Youth Counsellor.
Parent(s) or guardian(s) must be present to discuss the informed consent process with the counsellor.
Why is a student referred?
A student is referred to a Child and Youth Counsellor to assist with the following concerns:
- self-regulation, inattention, non-compliance, impulsivity and aggression;
- bullying prevention and intervention;
- social skills (friendship, conflict resolution, rejection, disappointment, change);
- Anger management;
- self-esteem (body image, competence);
- stress management strategies; and
- coping skills.
What does a Child and Youth Counsellor do?
With informed consent from parent(s) or guardian(s), a Child and Youth Counsellor will:
- access the student's Ontario Student Record (OSR) to gather information;
- meet with parent(s) or guardian(s) to discuss their child's needs;
- consult with relevant school and Board staff;
- provide appropriate interventions for the student; and
- prepare a written report at the end of services.
