Our psychological services team assists in the promotion of student wellness and learning. Team members include a Manager of Psychological and Speech Language Services, Psychologists, Psychological Associates and Psychometrists. These members are part of a multi-disciplinary team, consisting of:

  • Social Workers;
  • Child and Youth Counsellors;
  • Speech-Language Pathologists; and
  • Resource Teachers.

When is a student referred?
A referral begins with a school team meeting. This meeting involves both school staff and parent(s) or guardian(s). Our psychological services team will meet with parent(s) or guardian(s) in advance of providing services to discuss the student and obtain informed consent. During the meeting, information regarding the service is outlined in detail.

Our services
Psychological services may include:

  • psychological assessment and diagnosis;
  • consultation with school staff and parent(s) or guardian(s) due to issues raised during assessment;
  • resource to parents and school team for referrals and contact with community services, agencies and other professionals;
  • in-service and training for school staff and parent(s) or guardian(s);
  • consultation and follow-up for students who have been previously assessed; and
  • Consultation regarding transition planning

Psychological Assessment
A psychological assessment may involve classroom observation, interviews with school staff, parent(s) or guardian(s), a review of developmental and academic history, rating scales (eg. behaviour, social and emotional functioning attention, adaptive functioning), and the administration of standardized psychological and academic tests.

An assessment examines a student's:

  • verbal reasoning, visual-spatial reasoning, problem solving, cognitive ability, memory, attention;
  • learning style;
  • language processing;
  • social-emotional functioning (mood, self-esteem, social skills, anxiety);
  • behaviour;
  • academic achievement (reading, writing, mathematics);
  • executive function;
  • visual-motor integration; and
  • other areas of functioning as appropriate.
