Catholic Secondary School Chaplaincy

In the Durham Catholic District School Board, Secondary School Chaplaincy is a vital ministry that supports the spiritual and human development of students and the wider school community. Rooted in the Board’s mission, vision, and values, Chaplaincy helps foster a strong sense of Catholic community where all are welcomed, valued, and supported.

The school Chaplain is a visible presence and pastoral leader who works closely with students, staff, families, parishes, and community partners to nurture faith, well-being, and a sense of belonging. Chaplaincy services are available to all students, staff, and families, and are offered in a spirit of care, respect, and inclusion for people of all faith backgrounds.

Chaplaincy supports students through:

  • Pastoral care and accompaniment – offering a safe, supportive space and guidance during times of need
  • Prayer and liturgical life – leading school Masses, prayer, retreats, and faith celebrations
  • Faith formation and leadership – providing opportunities for students to grow in faith and take on leadership roles
  • Social justice and outreach – engaging students in living out Catholic Social Teaching through service and action
  • Connection to parish life – building meaningful links between school, home, and parish

Through this work, Chaplaincy helps students grow as discerning believers, compassionate leaders, and active contributors to the common good, living out Gospel values in their daily lives.
