Indigenous Student Celebration 2024On Tuesday, June 4, Grade 8 and Grade 12 Indigenous students and their families gathered together at the Pope Francis Centre for a year end celebration. Special thanks to our Indigenous Education Circle, Indigenous Community Partners, and Indigenous Education team for putting this incredible evening together.
DCDSB Numeracy FacilitatorsDuring the 2023-2024 school year, Numeracy Intervention Resource Teachers were introduced to 12 priority schools in the Durham Catholic District School Board. Three resource teachers collaborated with classroom educators throughout the year, conducting regular school visits to collect and analyze assessment data, track student progress, co-plan and co-teach math lessons, and share best practices.
Prayer Gardens at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic SchoolGrade 5 students at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School have taken a hands-on approach in the creation of new prayer gardens! Inspired by the desire to establish a serene focal point for prayer and gratitude for God’s creation, these gardens will offer a tranquil opportunity for prayer, reflection, and simply appreciating the wonders of nature.

Afternoon of Sharing and Dialogue at Home-School-Parish SymposiumOn Friday, June 14, we were so excited to welcome our local clergy, parish staff, parents, school administrators and school staff, for a special symposium with the goal to nurture collaborative relationships between families, parishes, and school staff, who share a strong commitment to Catholic education. We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who attended as we continue to strengthen the home-school-parish relationship.
On the Land Learning at All Saints Catholic Secondary SchoolOn Thursday, June 6, Indigenous community partner, Beedahbin Peltier, visited students at All Saints Catholic Secondary School. Beedahbin led the students in on the land learning in the forested area next to their school.
Vicky The Real Artist Visits Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High SchoolOn Friday, June 7, English Literature Studies students at Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School were fortunate to have the immensely talented Vicky The Real Artist visit their classroom. Vicky expertly guided the class through her knowledge of pyrography, a technique Vicky uses to express her deep connection to her Indigenous roots.
Chad Solomon Visits DCDSB Elementary SchoolsThroughout the month of May, Indigenous author, Chad Solomon visited six DCDSB schools to enhance the learning that took place in elementary classrooms. Chad used puppets and different voices to engage students and lead three workshops.
2024 Oshawa Junior Fire ChiefOn June 6, Oshawa Fire Services announced their 2024 Junior Fire Chief at Sir Albert Love Catholic School! Grade 5 and 6 students submitted videos on smoke alarms and home escape planning. Gabriel, a Grade 6 student, earned the title of 2024 Junior Fire Chief! At a special assembly, Gabriel was award fantastic prizes and even got to leave in a firetruck for an exclusive tour of the Oshawa Fire headquarters!
As Junior Fire Chief, Gabriel will promote fire safety at school, home and in the community.
